☕ Your Chance to Own Lakewood's Creepiest Landmark

So many things to do...so little time

Good morning, Buzz Nation!

Not sure if you heard—but you no longer have to take off your shoes to get through airport security at Hopkins. This is great news for people like me who rarely wear matching socks.

Thank you to everyone who came out to Brewnuts last night to support the Community Cat Project! The donuts were large and the kittens were small.

Today we’re buzzing on:

  • 🌽 Ohio Sweet corn: Don’t miss my hot takes on the cob

  • 💰 Your chance to own a 16-foot, legendary doll

  • 🥯 Two new eateries open up on the Westside

We hope you have a great weekend. See you out there!

COMMUNITY BLEND

🎄 End of an Era on Detroit Road 📍 Lakewood

Waiting for her next victim | Hixon’s Inc.

If you’ve ever driven down Detroit in Lakewood, you know a few things are guaranteed:

  • 🚦 You’ll hit every red light like it’s your job.

  • 🛍️ You’ll spot a shop you swear wasn’t there yesterday.

  • 👀 And you’ll avoid making direct eye contact with that towering 16-foot Raggedy Ann doll in the window out of fear it will come alive and follow you (just me?)

Well, that terrifying thrill is coming to an end as the new owner of Hixson's flower barn is downsizing and auctioning off the many nostalgic treasures from the historic shop on Detroit.

This bittersweet sale follows the 2023 passing of founder Bill Hixson, a world-renowned ornament designer who once decorated White House trees and earned handwritten notes from First Ladies.

But don’t hang your stocking in sadness just yet. Burke plans to keep the Hixson spirit alive through a smaller location or seasonal pop-ups. He hopes to continue the legacy of a place that, as Hixson himself put it, “didn’t just sell things... it sold memories.”

So if you’ve ever wanted to own a German Christmas pyramid, a Fabergé-style egg, or that emotionally complex Raggedy Ann—now’s your chance. Just don’t say we didn’t warn you. Full story via Mark Oprea, Cleveland Scene

WESTSIDE POUR OVER

🚿 North Olmsted: Moen does a slight reverse (osmosis): After plans to move HQ to Illinois, the faucet giant now says it’ll keep its North Olmsted R&D center partially open, which will keep several dozen jobs here on the Westside. (Crains Cleveland)

Avon Lake: The city by the shore puts the brakes on e-bike chaos: With near-misses and sidewalk-speeders on the rise, the city has passed new traffic rules limiting e-bike speeds, restricting motor use on sidewalks, and setting age minimums. Check out the new safety regulations

🦆 Put-in-bay: Come see the world’s largest rubber duck as it will have a temporary home on the island this Summer. The event is free and will be taking place from August 1st to the 3rd. Grab a “Don’t Give Up the Ship” Rubber Duck souvenir.

🧠 TRIVIA

Where Are All My Cobb-heads At?

Me at Heinen’s

It’s sweet corn season in Cleveland! Personally, I think more foods should come on a cob. The cob is such an underrated vessel for food consumption, I’m surprised we haven’t explored it further. Let’s get on that, Jeff Bezos!

Did you know that our very own Lorain County is one of Ohio’s top producers of sweet corn? In 2023, LoCo came in just shy of 200 bushels!

Which county in Ohio produced the highest corn yield (in bushels)?
