☕ What’s Hot on the Westside? (Hint: It’s Not Just the Weather)

Summer kicks off with concerts, cold brews, steelhead stories and dog meetups.

TOGETHER WITH THE OHIO SCOTTISH GAMES & CELTIC FESTIVAL

Happy Friday, Westsiders!

Get ready to put your umbrellas away (for now) and bust out the Sun Bum. We are looking at scorching highs in the 90s this weekend!

The beginning of the summer has been as unpredictable as the driver who cut me off on 480 this morning (relax, man…we’re all going to get where we’re going 🤙).

Today we’re buzzing on:

  • 🐟 This Westside river is ranked #2 in the nation

  • 🍿 Family-owned popcorn brand gets acquired

  • 🌞 Cleveland is celebrating the solstice.

Let’s make it a great day,

—The Briggses

TOGETHER WITH THE OHIO SCOTTISH GAMES & CELTIC FESTIVAL

Step Into Scotland Without Leaving Ohio 📍 Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds

Let’s paint a picture: the thunderous clash of medieval knights on horseback, the enchanting melody of bagpipes echoing across the fairgrounds, and the primal satisfaction of watching kilted athletes hurl telephone poles through the air. The 48th Ohio Scottish Games & Celtic Festival transforms Berea's Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds into the Scottish Highlands June 27-28, 2025.

Here is just a taste of the many events taking place throughout the weekend:

  • Whisky tasting and education (Tickets sold separately)

  • Scottish Highland games

  • Open piping, drumming competitions, and live music

  • Learn about falconry

  • How to trace your Scottish ancestry with a PhD

  • Knights of Valour, full-contact jousting & more

If none of these events tickle your fancy—how about burly men in kilts throwing heavy objects? I thought so.

Your family will love the children's area, getting to know Irish and Scottish dog breeds, and the magical "Calling of the Clans" torch ceremony Friday evening. There truly is something for everyone.

Last year’s festival had a record turnout and they are expecting to surpass that this year.

Don't let this Celtic adventure pass you by—secure your tickets now before prices increase at the gate!

METROPARKS

Which Westside river ranked #2 in the nation? 📍 Westside

For all of you who grew up on the Westside, I know that 100% of you guessed correctly that our beloved Rocky River ranks #2 in the nation for fly fishing according to USA Today.

Why do so many travel from all over, step into their waders, and grace our beautiful stream?

The Rocky River is a premier steelhead fishing destination in Ohio, thanks to its role as a Lake Erie tributary regularly stocked with Manistee strain steelhead by the Ohio DNR. With its diverse riverbed, scenic cliffs, and a productive spawning run from October through April, the river offers ideal conditions for anglers to connect with actively feeding, lake-grown steelhead.

Add it to the list of what makes the Westside the Bestside!

LOCAL BUSINESS

Family-owned treat maker sells to Arizona firm 📍 North Ridgeville

Born in a West Park basement in the 1940s and nurtured by three generations of the McGuire family, Poppee’s Popcorn grew from humble beginnings into a cherished North Ridgeville institution, known for its buttery treats and heartfelt ties to the community.

Walter and Edythe McGuire | After Walter passed, Edythe opened up a candy store on Woodward Ave in Lakewood

At a recent city council meeting, Mayor Kevin Corcoran honored the McGuires for over 60 years of service, recalling how the business flourished—from Edythe McGuire’s penny candy store to Tim McGuire’s expansion into the bustling Taylor Woods Industrial Park.

Now, as the family passes the torch to Arizona-based Lehi Valley Trading Company, a longtime partner, Poppee’s enters a new chapter. Let’s hope that the new company continues to preserve its rich legacy and hometown roots. Full Story 👉 HERE

@michaelweberjr at The Hooley

We were minding our own business at The Hooley in Kamm’s Corners Saturday when we heard an absolute shredstorm coming from the main stage. The Michael Weber Show is an up-and-coming band from Akron that is a maniac on the guitar and exudes positive energy with every electric movement.

This was the first time I had experienced the realization that the person I was watching on stage in front of 200 people would soon be performing in front of tens of thousands.

If you have the chance to see The Michael Weber Show live and in person, do it!

🧠 TRIVIA

Last night's severe weather had us watching Betsy Kling rather than playing sand volleyball at Razzle's. In 2024, 74 Tornadoes touched down in Ohio breaking the record set in 1992.
