☕ Something Fun For Your Friday

Celebrate Cleveland's birthday with a fun-filled, Westside weekend

Good morning, Buzz Nation.

The Westside weekend is finally here!

Our only weekend goal? Stay more balanced than the Browns’ social media person, who took a surprise dive into Lake Erie.

Our idea of balance? Mixing in a Sunday salad to offset the damage done.

Today we’re buzzing about:

  • 🤣 ChatGPT roasts Westside cities

  • 📰 Hudson News enthusiasts, get excited

  • 🍣 New Westside food spots to try

We hope you have a great weekend. See you out there!

SOMETHING FUN

We asked ChatGPT to roast each Westside city. How’d it do?

Avon: Where the driveways are longer than most relationships and the biggest drama is whether to hit Target before or after your 3rd Starbucks run.

Avon Lake: A lakeside utopia where people go to retire at 38, drink wine in Yeti tumblers, and pretend their HOA isn’t slowly stealing their soul.

Lakewood: The land of drafty charm, where you pay half a mil for lead paint, a haunted basement, and street parking that's a full-contact sport.

Westlake: Basically Crocker Park with houses. If it’s not a chain restaurant or a luxury SUV, Westlake legally can’t recognize it.

Bay Village: A picturesque suburb where everyone jogs, no one locks their doors, and teens throw “ragers” that end promptly at 10 PM so the neighbors don't call Karen.

Ohio City: Where beards, breweries, and backyard chickens rule. It’s impossible to order a coffee without hearing someone say, “my band’s playing at Mahall’s tonight.”

Rocky River: The land of athleisure royalty, where folks casually drop “we were just in Chagrin this weekend” like it’s a personality trait.

COMMUNITY BLEND

Big News for CLE Flyers (and Their Families) 📍 Hopkins

Starting August 11, Cleveland Hopkins Airport is rolling out the Hopkins Hangout Pass, a game-changing perk that lets non-flyers access the secure side of the terminal.

This is huge for people who want to soak up those pre-vacation vibes at ‘The Lube”, even if they’re not flying anywhere.

The pass costs nothing, must be requested online in advance (starting Aug. 6), and is limited to 100 people per day between 7 AM and 10 PM, so plan ahead!

Big News for Lorain County: $67.4M Just Landed 📍 Elyria

Not for a stadium. Not for some study that collects dust.
This is $67.4 million going toward real infrastructure—and it could reshape the entire West Side.

Here’s what’s happening:

🛠️ A 1,000-acre mega industrial site is being developed near the Lorain County Regional Airport.
🚰 It’ll fix long-standing sewer and water issues that have scared off businesses for years.
🏗️ Once finished, the site will be “shovel-ready” for manufacturers, logistics companies, and high-impact industries to move in.

Why it matters:
This isn’t just another project. It’s a strategy.

Lorain County is saying:
“We’re not waiting for opportunity—we’re building the runway.”

The result?

  • New jobs

  • Stronger local investment

  • Upgraded infrastructure

  • A ripple effect of economic momentum across our entire region

This is the kind of foundational investment that helps the Westside grow, not just this year, but for decades.

THEATRE TALK

Cleveland Ballet Brings the Magic to the West Side 📍 Vermillion

On Saturday, July 26, the Cleveland Ballet returns to Vermilion’s Harbourtown Fine Arts Center for Encore!, a one-night-only outdoor performance featuring crowd favorites from Paquita, Don Quixote, and a whimsical Picasso-inspired duet.

Westsiders can enjoy a 6 PM wine and appetizer reception inside the historic Opera House, followed by a 7 PM performance on the lawn.

For an extra splash of elegance, top off the evening with a five-course dinner at Chez François, specially priced for ballet-goers!

🧠 TRIVIA

Happy Birthday, Cle(a)veland!

Before there were cars, trains, or even a city named “Cleveland,” there was Moses Cleaveland. Our founder made his original grueling journey from Schenectady, New York, to the banks of the Cuyahoga River on July 22nd, 1796.

He wasn’t alone. He led a 50-person crew hired by the Connecticut Land Company to map out and settle the Western Reserve (aka Northeast Ohio).

🛶 The catch? They traveled by flat-bottomed boats, hauling gear up rivers, across lakes, and even around Niagara Falls (yes, they carried boats around it).

How long did it take Moses Cleaveland’s surveying team to reach the future site of Cleveland from Schenectady, New York, in July 1796?

NEW RESTAURANTS

Westside’s Newest Gem: Kyuu-juu 📍 Ohio City

After a year and a half of buzzworthy pop-ups, Kyuu-juu has officially landed in a charming Victorian home in Ohio City, serving up beautifully crafted Japanese small plates meant for sharing, sipping, and ordering round after round.

The menu is packed with standouts like wagyu beef on sizzling clay, flash-fried octopus, shishito peppers, clay pot rice, and a curated selection of sake, Asian lagers, and chilled highballs.

With its stylish setting, top-tier ingredients, and laid-back “keep it coming” vibe, Kyuu-juu is another exciting addition to Ohio City’s dining scene and a big win for this fast-rising neighborhood.

Build the Pho Brings Custom Bowls to Westside 📍 North Olmsted

Build the Pho, the build-your-own noodle bowl spot, just opened a new location in North Olmsted — with plans to slurp up a third in Ohio City.

Diners can mix and match broths (beef or vegan), noodles, and proteins like brisket, rare beef, shrimp, tofu, and more. Jodie and I have not yet tried it, but based on the Google reviews of the OG location, we will plan to go soon.
