Nonprofit Supports Area Seniors | Lakewood

LakewoodAlive is on a mission to ensure no senior in Lakewood has to sleep on lawn furniture (yes, really) or a deflating air mattress. Their "Free Beds for Seniors" program is tackling a growing need, as the number of seniors seeking help has doubled in the last seven years.

In its first year, the program provided 15 beds, and thanks to a new $3,500 grant from the Lakewood/Rocky River Rotary Club, they’re aiming to help even more.

If you're a senior living in Lakewood or know of someone in need who meets the income requirements, please ask for help!

✨ DiscoveryWorks re-opened | Avon Lake

Parents, your long-awaited nightmare is over! DiscoveryWorks just unveiled its new $1.2 million makeover on February 1st, and let me tell you why you need to load up the kids and head to the Avon Lake library.

First off, if you've ever experienced the particular joy of trying to entertain children during a Northeast Ohio winter (hello, cabin fever), this couldn't come at a better time. The renovated space is basically an indoor adventure land, perfect for those days when the Lake gifts us with another round of lake-effect snow. Why you'll love it:

They've added more seating areas, which means you can sit and watch your little Einstein explore instead of hovering awkwardly in a corner
The new layout accommodates kids of all abilities, so everyone can join in the fun.
There's a fancy new classroom lab for school visits (field trip coordinators, take note!)

But here's the real reason to visit: While your kids think they're just playing and having fun, they're actually diving into hands-on science, art, and tech activities. It's like sneaking vegetables into their mac and cheese – they're learning, but they're having too much fun to notice. And for those of us who grew up visiting the original DiscoveryWorks (yes, I'm dating myself here), it's pretty amazing to see how our little local gem has evolved since 1995 while keeping that special Avon Lake community feel. Ice on the Rocky River has formed a dam near the Emerald Necklace Marina in Rocky River.

Before the big freeze, I rode my bike down here and saw a fisherman batch a beautiful Steelhead. Crazy how fast things change here in Northeast Ohio!

🐔 Chicken and Whiskey looking for new home | Ohio City

Pour one out for Soho Chicken + Whiskey, folks. The spot with the best chicken and waffles I have ever had is set to be replaced by a Chipotle in Fall 2026. After 13 years of serving up some of the best chicken and waffles in Cleveland, owners Nolan Konkoski and Molly Smith are getting priced out as the Market District continues its evolution from a scrappy local hangout to a mainstream destination. (Does anyone else remember when Mitchell's was the "big chain" on the block?)

The good news? Their landlord is actively helping them find a new spot nearby. The bittersweet news? This is another sign that Ohio City's success is bringing the kind of changes that tend to push out the very businesses that made the neighborhood special in the first place. Full story 👉 HERE

🚀 Hold onto your space helmets | Brook Park

The west side is about to become a gateway to Mars. Blue Abyss just inked a deal with NASA Glenn to build a $250 million space training facility right in our backyard, complete with a 200-foot-deep pool for astronaut training (that's like a 20-story building, but underwater).

But here's the economic impact:

200+ new high-paying jobs in fields like engineering and research.
Local construction workers who'll get to tell their grandkids they helped build the place that trained astronauts for Mars missions.

Between this and NASA Glenn, we're not just getting jobs, we're becoming a major player in the space industry.
