TODAY IN CLEVELAND HISTORY

Image courtesy of the Cleveland Press Collection at Cleveland State University Library.

Today is Earth Day. Most people know the story of how the Cuyahoga River caught on fire (it reportedly happened 13 times 😬). Any time you meet someone from another city, they never forget to tell you.

Did you know that the troublesome flammable river, 1,000 CSU students, and then Cleveland Mayor Carl Stokes played a vital part in creating the national holiday we know today as Earth Day?

Photo courtesy of Cleveland State University

On April 22nd, 1970, about 1,000 Cleveland State students marched from campus to the Cuyahoga River, while many Greater Clevelanders showed their support through special environmental programs at schools and colleges.

Outrage from the incident led to the establishment of the federal Environmental Protection Agency, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Water Act, and the first Earth Day.

So next time someone tries to jab at you for living in the mistake by the lake or the place where the river caught on fire, remind them politely that the citizens of this great city came together to save the river and protect natural lands all across the country.
