Buzz readers, you’re invited

Plus: State Championships, Short Takes, and Burrito Wars

Good morning, Buzz Nation.

Veterans Day always makes me reflect. Here on the Westside, veterans are everywhere — neighbors, coaches, the folks behind the counter at our favorite coffee shops. They served our country, and now they quietly serve our community every day.

If there’s a veteran you’d like to recognize, whether it’s a family, friend, or neighbor, reply to this email with their name. We’ll give them a shout-out on our Instagram story today.

Today we’re buzzing on:

  • The Westside Buzz × Cleveland Cavs 🏀

  • Westside High School soccer domination ⚽

  • A new “Short Takes” column 🗞️

Wishing you a great week,

—The Briggses

A Message From The Buzz

We are proud to be partnering with the Cleveland Cavs!

They’ve hooked up The Westside Buzz community with something pretty awesome: an exclusive discount code for Cavs, Monsters, Charge tickets — and even other events at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

cleveland cavs tickets

That’s right. Just for Buzz Nation.

And that’s not all…

The Cavs also invited us to plan a Buzz Night Out — a game where they’ll open the concourse early just for us so we can mingle, grab a drink, and kick off the night with a little Westsider happy hour before tip-off.

Before we lock it in, we want to know:

Short Takes

Thank You, Veterans, for Your Service!

Avon

Flipping good news: The former Smith’s Custom Catering building (37500 Colorado Ave.) will be remodeled to house the Westside Pancake restaurant.

Turkey Dash: Support a good cause and get some exercise before gobbling up on turkey this Thanksgiving as registration is now open for the annual Karen P. Nakon Turkey Dash set to take place at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving (Nov. 27) at Avon High School.

Creative studio: A new business recently opened in place of Pinspiration (34970 Detroit Road), which closed several weeks ago.

Creative Loft on Detroit is an independently-owned and exclusive new creative studio for the area, offering a creative space for people of all ages to craft.

Avon Lake

Money, money, money: City officials are pursuing the use of Tax Increment Financing to purchase lakefront property from the Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group (ALERG) at the site of the former power plant, and to support public infrastructure improvements in connection with the Sandridge Run and Harbor Crest developments. Those improvements would include the intersection of State Route 83 and Walker Road.

TIF is a commonly used tool for local governments to fund public infrastructure improvements associated with new development. Although they have been around since the 1950s, they are not widely known or understood.

Light it up: Light Up the Park - Holiday Celebration will take place from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 22 at Veteran's Memorial Park. The official lighting of the park is at 6 p.m.

The city is also offering photos with the big guy himself. Northcoast Christmas visit & photos with Santa will be offered from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Dec. 5; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at Veteran's Memorial Park

Santa will be available for family visits and photos. Pre-registration is required on the city’s Parks and Rec website. Family reservations are sold in 15-minute time blocks. Please plan on arriving 15 minutes before your scheduled time.

Bay Village

Snow angels program: Winter is here! Volunteers are needed to be a Snow Angel. As a Snow Angel volunteer, you are paired with a senior for the entire winter season and are responsible to provide them with snow removal.

For more information, go to cityofbayvillage.com.

North Ridgeville

Coffee chat: Join Mayor Kevin Corcoran in Council Chambers at City Hall from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Nov. 18 for his monthly Coffee & Conversation gathering.

Joining him this month is Heather Kaesgen, CEO of North Ridgeville Community Care, who will share practical ways the community can come together to support local families. Community Care is currently in need of donations to restock its pantry. Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation to support Community Care’s ongoing efforts to serve local families.

Rocky River

Grand opening: Celebrate the Senior Center’s transformation during a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting ceremony from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 21. The new space includes a lecture hall, cafe, fitness studio, restrooms, and dance studio.

rocky river rec cancels pickleball

Oh, behave: Can’t blame the kids this time, as now the adults can’t seem to play nice in the sandbox. The Rocky River Recreation Center recently announced that because adults have been too disruptive, there will be no more pickleball at the Recreation Center for the rest of the year. Take your paddles and go home.

Rebuilding: It’s been five months since a fire broke out at Rocky River Brewing Company. The owners recently provided an update, which includes plans to reopen the restaurant in early March 2026.

Westlake

Nominations needed: The Westlake Town Criers are accepting nominations for the prestigious ‘Mr. & Mrs. Westlake’ award. The honor recognizes individuals who have contributed to the welfare of Westlake's youth and citizens.

To nominate deserving candidates, please provide an overview of the nominee, highlighting their contributions. Nomination letters can be sent to the Westlake Town Criers, P.O. Box 45224, Westlake, OH 44145. You can also nominate by contacting Rick Grane at 440-829-0974 or [email protected].

High-tech leaf collection: City officials recently introduced the Daily Leaf Tracker web app, making leaf collection smarter. Residents can now get real-time updates from the Service Department, email notifications when crews reach your street, and AI-powered guidance on collection rules.

Collection continues until early to mid-December, weather permitting. Only leaves will be collected; keep branches, grass, and trash separate.

COMMUNITY BLEND

Burrito Wars 📍 Ohio City

chipotle versus ohio city burritoo

If you haven’t heard, Chipotle is moving into Ohio City — taking over the old Soho Chicken & Whiskey spot on West 25th.

Now, Jodie and I enjoy Chipotle more than most people (our burrito bowls could probably qualify for frequent flyer miles), but we’ve got mixed feelings about this one. What’s always made Ohio City Ohio City is the mix of independent local shops, breweries, and weird-but-wonderful spots that give the neighborhood its flavor.

The good news? Ohio City Burrito — the beloved Cal-Mex joint run by sibling duo Jeff and Michelle Pizzuli — isn’t flinching. They just announced plans to move from their original spot into a much larger flagship location down the street, taking over one-third of the old Family Dollar space.

So while the big guys move in, our hometown heroes are rolling up their sleeves, ready for the challenge

If you’re the kind of person who roots for the little guy (and appreciates a burrito filled with Westside roots), swing by Ohio City Burrito and show them some love.

Westside Pour Over

Lakewood: Light Up Lakewood Parade Registration is Open. You might just see The Buzz in the parade this year.

Avon: Crushers Stadium is renamed ForeFront Field

Westside: We rode all the way to the North Pole and back to compile the Westside’s official list of Christmas Pop-up bars.

Oberlin: The Police Department is hosting a “Cram a Cruiser” food drive this weekend to donate non-perishables to Oberlin Community Services.

High School Sports

Two titles. One day. Total domination.

Avon High School pulled off something truly wild on Sunday — two state championships in a single afternoon.

🏐 Lady Eagles Volleyball got their revenge on Whitehouse Anthony Wayne (the team that knocked them out last year), winning a gritty 3-1 match to bring home the school’s first volleyball state title.

Eagles Boys Soccer weren’t about to be left out. Senior forward Brock Harmon buried the game-winner to beat Kings Mills Kings at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus — delivering Lorain County’s first-ever soccer state championship (boys or girls!).

Between the two squads, Avon might need a bigger trophy case… and maybe a few more days off school.

Bay Village: Back-to-Back Champs

The Bay Village girls are flirting with a dynasty after winning back-to-back Division III state titles. Whatever’s in that Westside water — it’s working.

Their boys team made it all the way to the finals, falling just short after a gutsy postseason run.

Friday Night Lights: Playoff Edition

It’s a full slate for Westside football fans this Friday — here’s who’s still dancing:

  • St. Ed’s handled Berea-Midpark and now faces Toledo Whitmer at First Federal Lakewood Stadium (7 PM).

  • Avon steamrolled Olmsted Falls 46-13 and heads to Wadsworth for a showdown with the Grizzlies (7 PM).

  • North Ridgeville beat Anthony Wayne to earn a road test against #1-seed Medina Highland (7 PM).

  • Rocky River toppled Revere and now takes on Medina Buckeye (7 PM).

Clear your Friday night — the Westside is on fire. 🔥
