☕ Browns Lose Again, but the Westside Remains Undefeated

SOUPer Bowl | Sunflowers in full bloom | 18 Westside events

Good morning, Buzz Nation.

Another gorgeous September weekend… unless you were watching the Browns on Fox from 1–4 PM.

Same story: crushing errors, missed kicks, and now our Week 1 record since 1998 is a sparkling 3-23-1. Pain. (Shoutout to the 37% of you who answered Friday’s trivia correctly.)

On the upside, the defense actually looked decent, and the rookies showed flashes. But honestly, the best part about living here is that no matter how much the Browns hurt us, the Westside stays undefeated.

Perfect weather. Endless things to do. And unlike our football team, our community knows how to win.

Today we’re buzzing on:

  • 🐢 Cyclist in the Metroparks becomes a turtle bodyguard

  • 🏠 New home construction in Lakewood

  • 🌻 Maria’s field is in full bloom

See you around town,

COMMUNITY BUZZ

Impromptu Turtle Rescue Mission 📍 Rocky River Reservation

Sometimes you head into the Metroparks for a bike ride and end up becoming… a turtle bodyguard.

That’s exactly what happened to Joe Shearer near Big Met golf course when a Ken Miller flagged him down and asked if he knew anything about baby turtles. Spoiler alert: he didn’t.

But before he could even answer, droves of dirt-covered, baby snapping turtles started popping out of the mud and instinctively waddling toward the marsh (kind of like some of my tee shots).

Joe knew what had to be done—protect them at any cost.

For the next two hours, four random Clevelanders stood guard as the tiny turtles made their dangerous crossing. Joe said it felt like they ushered 40-50 turtles across on their harrowing journey.

Some passersby stopped to soak in the moment, others kept moving, but Joe said it felt like one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences even as it was happening.

Thanks to this crew (Joe, Ken Miller, Sofia Fontanez, and her friend Laura), every turtle that crossed the path made it home safely!

COMMUNITY BLEND

New 10-unit housing complex set for construction 📍 Lakewood

New housing developments in Lakewood are few and far between, which is why the upcoming Thoreau Place townhomes are turning heads. This 10-unit project is set to break ground on a narrow strip of land nestled between Thoreau and Donald avenues, right alongside the railroad tracks. This is a bold use of space, building so close to the railroad tracks, but Lakewood is one of the most densely populated communities in the state, so we can’t be too picky.

With inventory still tight across the real estate market, this development is a welcome (and rare) sign of growth for those keeping a close eye on Westside housing opportunities.

Rival schools aim to fill pantries 📍 Avon & Avon Lake

Two rivals. One cause.

Avon and Avon Lake City Schools are teaming up for a friendly food drive competition to stock local food pantries. Last year, Avon Lake took home bragging rights—but this year, it’s anyone’s game.

Here’s how to pitch in: donate peanut butter, cereal, canned meats and fruits, or paper products at drop-off locations at schools in both communities. Collections run through Friday, October 17th, ending with the big Avon vs. Avon Lake football matchup.

It’s simple: every can, every box, every jar helps. No matter which team you cheer for on the field, we all win when our neighbors have what they need.

Maria’s Field of Hope Is in Bloom 📍 Avon

@prayersfrommaria on IG

Tucked off Jaycox Road in Avon, Maria’s Field of Hope is now in full bloom — 18 golden acres of sunflowers standing tall as a radiant symbol of love, remembrance, and the fight to cure childhood cancer.

From sunrise to sunset, rain or shine, visitors are welcome to walk the peaceful paths, dedicate a sunflower in honor of a child gone too soon, or simply pause to reflect on the beauty and meaning behind the field.

Thanks to the work of Prayers for Maria, which has raised over $12 million for pediatric cancer research, this field is a reminder of the power of hope, community, and the remarkable things that can bloom when we come together.

NEW BUSINESS

CIVIC ISSUES

Bay Village: Officials are drafting new legislation to regulate e-bikes amid rising resident complaints about reckless riding and sidewalk safety. The goal is to align with state law while addressing local concerns through stricter rules and community education.

Avon: The city is planning to build a second fire station on the city’s east side near Middleton Road to improve response times after call volumes surpassed 4,000 annually, with construction expected to begin soon and the station operational within two years.

Lakewood: After receiving a grant from the county, the city is looking for input as they aim to increase community involvement in its public art process. Take the survey here.
