NON-PROFIT SPOTLIGHT

World Homeless Day: A Beacon of Hope at Laura’s Home

Nearly half of Cleveland’s children under the age of five live in poverty—and for many families, one setback can mean living out of a car, couch surfing, or remaining in an unsafe situation.

In honor of World Homeless Day, we’re spotlighting Laura’s Home Women’s Crisis Center, an organization changing lives right here on the Westside.

Jodie and I had the chance to tour the facility this past week, and we were genuinely moved by what we saw.

With 166 beds across 55 rooms, Laura’s Home is more than a shelter—it offers transformation. Women and families enter in crisis and graduate with stable income, confidence, and resources to secure safe housing for themselves and their children.

This is what sets Laura’s Home apart. The programs go beyond immediate needs. By providing a safe space for spiritual growth, life skills, and workforce education, they can break the cycle of poverty.

We were especially moved by the woman who greeted us during our visit—the first graduate of Laura’s Home, now working there full-time. Her story is living proof that stability and independence are possible.

And this year, their mission expanded with 16 new transitional townhomes, offering families independence while staying together.

If you’re looking for a way to give back, Laura’s Home offers volunteer opportunities where your time and heart can directly change lives.

HIDDEN GEM REVIEW

Palazzo Happy Hour…We Give it a 9 | West Blvd

If you’ve been reading The Buzz for a while, you already know Jodie and I have a weakness for a good happy hour. The Palazzo has always been one of our favorites — the kind of spot we save for special occasions.

This year, we made it a goal to go more often. (noble goal, right) Their weeknight happy hour made that decision a little too easy.

We tried the pasta (rich and just the right size), a crisp flatbread, and mussels that disappeared fast. Every plate looked and tasted like something you’d expect to find at a fine-dining spot — just without the fine-dining bill.

If it’s been a while since you’ve been to The Palazzo, maybe this is your sign to go back.

And we want to know — what’s your go-to happy hour on the Westside? We might feature it next.

Fore! Why You Might See Golf Carts on City Streets | Cleveland

If you’ve ever been to Old Town Scottsdale, you know the vibe—hop in a golf cart, breeze from bar to bar, and suddenly getting around is part of the fun.

Now Cleveland City Council is considering bringing that same energy downtown. For a $150 annual fee, businesses could operate street-legal golf carts inspected yearly and bound by traffic laws (no doing donuts in Public Square).

Why it works: it boosts accessibility, cuts down car chaos during Browns games, and adds personality to our streets—like The Golf Cart Girl Cleveland already does with neighborhood tours.

Sure, the city’s worried about safety, but imagine this: a more fun, accessible, and distinctly Cleveland way to move. Nashville has pedal taverns. San Francisco has cable cars. Why can’t we have golf carts cruising down West 6th?

So, what do you think?

Would you take a golf cart ride from W. 25th to a Downtown event?

Assuming the company operating passed safety inspections and were properly certified.

THE WESTSIDE BUZZ-SAW

Spooky season is here, and we’re setting the mood with a chilling true story from right here on the Westside—told by Reddit user vinno75.

Give it up for our graphics department (Jodie & our cat Carl)

Growing up in Lakewood in the ’80s, we lived across from close family friends in a massive old house on the lake — once a rumored Prohibition-era smuggling stop.

One night my little brother was sleeping over there and was woken up terrified to the low hum of an engine.
Not outside. Inside.

The floorboards shook.
And then—an old-school Model T drove straight through the bedroom wall, headlights glowing, rolling silently across the room before vanishing through the opposite wall like smoke.

Years later, when I told that story to my best friend (whose brother was there that night), he said, “Yeah… our mom used to tell us, ‘Don’t bother your dad. He saw the car again last night.’”

And here’s where it gets even weirder. Every member of that family — and a dozen friends who’d slept over — had the same vivid dreams: aliens, sea monsters, and the lake rising until it swallowed the house whole.

They’d also see shadow figures in the halls. Always brushed off as tricks of the mind.

Across the street in our old house, I’d hear footsteps climbing to my attic room every night. I was a “tough” teen, but not that tough — I eventually moved my bed next to my parents’ room.

Only after we moved out did they tell me the attic used to be the maid’s quarters. Legend has it she died a terrible death in that very room—trapped in a house fire.
