☕ How Many Winter Coats Fit in a Subaru

Plus: Mobile MD makes urgent care house calls, and Salmon Dave's taste of New Orleans

Good morning and happy Tuesday, Buzz Nation.

A big shoutout to all the Westside road crews who spent the weekend clearing snow and keeping us safe. Without you, we wouldn’t have made it to Heinen’s for Italian Wedding Soup ingredients — and that would’ve been a disaster.

Speaking of… If anyone out there has access to a snow plow I can test drive, it’s a lifelong dream to take one for a spin. I promise to bring it back…

Today, we’re buzzing on:

  • Today in Cleveland History: the Blizzard of ‘78

  • A few new restaurant announcements

  • 27 fun Westside events to keep you warm this week

We hope you have a great week. See you out there!

When Your Body Wakes Up Grumpy 📍 Westlake

Instagram Reel

If your body has started making little comments lately, like tight hips, a shoulder that’s suddenly “opinionated,” or stiffness that doesn’t disappear after coffee, you’re in good company. Most of us just push through and hope for the best.

Jodie and I recently did a Performance Tune-Up at Bridge Rehab & Performance, and it clicked why people rave about them. It wasn’t a rushed appointment or a cookie-cutter plan. Kyle and Emily watched how we moved, explained what was going on, and worked on the spots that have quietly been annoying us for years. My golf swing feels looser, and Jodie’s back has officially stopped throwing temper tantrums.

🟢 Westside Buzz readers only: 15 people can book a $49 Performance Tune-Up (normally ~$125).

It’s a 1:1 session with Kyle, Erin, or Emily, all doctors of physical therapy. Based on what your body needs, your session may include mobility work, assisted stretching, dry needling, cupping, or therapeutic massage.

Warm the Westside

warm the westside coat drive

You all did something incredible.

We asked Buzz Nation to open your hearts (and your closets) for our 2nd annual Warm the Westside Winter Coat Drive and did you ever deliver.

Over the past week, we collected 135 winter coats and more than 100 other warm items that are now on their way to The City Mission, where they'll directly help neighbors who need them most.

Fun fact: 135 coats is exactly how many you can stuff into a 2021 Subaru Forester Sport.

Look ma! We’re on the news!

Big shoutout to Gingham Market and Rozi’s Wine House for being our community dropoff locations.

When we started The Buzz, our goal was simple: spotlight the best of the Westside—local gems, great events, people doing good things. What we didn’t expect was just how strong the hunger for real community would be. How much people want to show up, give back, and make this place better together.

So from the bottom of our hearts: thank you. We’re so proud to be building this with all of you.

Shining a Light on History 📍Avon

avon center cemetary sign

Members of the Avon Landmarks Preservation Commission recently applied to the Ohio History Connection for consideration of an Ohio Historical Marker to recognize the significance of the Avon Center Cemetery.

The Commission’s application aims to acknowledge the cemetery’s deep historical roots, from its geological origins to its significance as a community burial ground for over 200 years. ‍

Although once believed to be a prehistoric burial mound constructed by the Woodland Indians and later used as a cemetery by white settlers, no formal archaeological investigations have been conducted to validate it was used by aboriginal Indians, according to the press release. ‍Pioneers and those who followed have been laid to rest for over two centuries in the cemetery. The oldest gravestone dates to 1818.

Two noteworthy individuals buried there are Avon’s founder, Wilbur Cahoon, and Dr. Norton S. Townsend, a noted physician, politician, pioneer in agricultural education, and one of the founders of The Ohio State University (Ohio Marker 6- 47). Veterans from five wars, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, WWI, and WWII, have their final resting place in the Avon Center Cemetery. —An excerpt from Short Takes

Today in Cleveland History

The Great Blizzard of ‘78

We got hit hard these past few days but it could always be worse. Ohio’s most infamous blizzard hit before sunrise on Jan. 26, 1978—and left the entire state paralyzed.

Some of the worst parts

With wind gusts topping out at an astonishing 82 mph and wind chills plunging below -50°F, it felt like the Midwest got sent back to the Ice Age. The atmospheric pressure dropped so low it set state records and rivaled some hurricanes. Snowfall totals were less important than the 20-foot drifts that buried roads, flipped semis, and shut down the entire Ohio Turnpike for the first time in history.

At least 51 people died. Many of which were found in stranded cars or homes without heat—while National Guard helicopters dropped bread and Coast Guard planes flew in emergency food rations. Major General James Clem of the Ohio National Guard compared the shutdown to a statewide nuclear attack.
