☕ Good Company is expanding to two new Westside locations

Good morning, Westsiders.

Sunday was a special day in Cleveland. The Browns won a football game in a torrential downpour that sent poncho sales citywide skyrocketing. Basically, hell froze over and flooded at the same time.

It wasn’t glamorous, but we got the job done. Plus anytime you have the chance to high five strangers around you while seeing the Browns win is a beautiful Sunday.

Here’s what else is heating up (rain or shine) on the Westside this week…

  • Bay Village gets a historical marker

  • Purple Warrior Thrift aims to give back

  • West Side Market Phase II

Hope to see you out there!

You can’t tell Ohio’s story without mentioning the Westside’s commitment to upholding and strengthening democracy. A recent Ohio Historical Marker has been unveiled to celebrate the Bay Village Chapter of the League of Women Voters.

Here is a summary of the marker’s message:

Founded in 1948 with Dorothy M. Austin as president, the Bay Village Chapter of the League of Women Voters aimed to educate residents about informed voting. Their first initiative helped establish a city charter, leading Bay Village to become a city in 1951. The chapter continues to promote voter education and civic engagement through advocacy and public policy efforts.

Purple Warrior Thrift Aims to Give Back 📍 Avon Lake

A new thrift store with a big heart has opened in Avon Lake. The Purple Warrior Thrift Store, located at 33684 Walker Road, celebrated its grand opening on October 16th.

Owner Jane Dietrich is donating 100% of the store's profits to cancer-related organizations, with a new recipient chosen every six months. The store's name reflects the purple ribbon for cancer awareness and honors the warrior spirit of those who fight the disease.

Avon Lake Mayor Mark Spaetzel was present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony to welcome the new business. The store offers a variety of secondhand items, including clothing, home decor, and more.

THIS WEEKEND IN WESTSIDE HISTORY

The Legend of Bradstreet’s Landing 📍 Rocky River

Bradstreet’s Landing, City of Rocky River

Did you know that a dramatic chapter of pre-Revolutionary War history unfolded right on the shores of Rocky River? On the stormy night of October 18, 1764, British Colonel John Bradstreet (sound familiar?) and his 1,500 troops were caught in a violent squall on Lake Erie.

Forced ashore just west of the river's mouth, the storm wrecked 25 of their boats, a devastating blow to their expedition returning from Fort Detroit. The soldiers spent the next three days salvaging supplies before many had to begin a grueling overland march back to Fort Niagara.

The Buzz knows a thing or two about long walks…

Today, this historic site is commemorated as Bradstreet's Landing, a quiet park that was once the scene of a desperate fight for survival.

WESTSIDE MARKET NEWS

From Garbage to Galleria 📍 West 25th

Rendering of the courtyard between the arcades and the market hall

The West Side Market’s area between the produce alley and the market hall is lovingly referred to as trash alley. Today it’s used to house big black trash bags out in the open. But when phase II of the West Side market project is completed, it will go from refuse to relaxation. This rendering shows what it will look like.

From the West Side Market’s recent Instagram post, “It will allow us to connect the two areas and be a true gathering place that people want. Where local Clevelanders and visitors can gather, get to know each other and feel the true, authentic culinary scene.”

RESTAURANT TALK

Good Company Expanding 📍 Ohio City & Gordon Square

A hot topic of conversation at our friend get-togethers is often “what are your favorite wings in Cleveland?” We are blessed with so many good wing joints on the Westside, but my answer is always the same. Good Company.

Well, good news if you feel the same way I do. Good Company will be expanding into two different Westside locations and making major investments in the communities that are constantly devouring their fall off the bone beauties.

The first will be a new flagship restaurant at the Welleon Apartments on Detroit Avenue in Gordon Square — a 4,800-square-foot space designed to boost visibility and accessibility. The second will be “Good Company’s 2098 Bakery Kitchen,” a production kitchen and small pickup spot in Ohio City’s Market District, inside the historic brick building with the “Greetings from Cleveland” mural on West 25th Street.

George Schindler, co-founder of Hospitality Restaurants, passed away last week. Best known for Westside and Downtown staples such as Cabin Club, Delmonico’s Steakhouse, Rosewood Grill, and Thirsty Parrot, George was known for treating his employees right and having that trickle down to customers.

I was lucky enough to spend time with George and his family growing up witnessing his generosity, hospitality, and drive up close.

George’s legacy will live on in the values he instilled in his company, family, and friends.

LOCAL BUSINESS

RoadPrintz Reimagines Street Painting

A Cleveland-based startup is flipping the old saying “that’s how we’ve always done it” on its head.

Former Case Western Reserve University electrical engineering professor Wyatt Newman and East Side mechanic Sam Bell have teamed up to build RoadPrintz, a robotic street-painting system designed to make road work faster, safer, and far more efficient.

If there’s any city that knows its way around orange barrels and road construction, it’s Cleveland. So it’s no surprise that this unlikely duo found a way to take one of the city’s biggest pain points and turn it into a technologically advanced, homegrown solution.

WHAT’S HAPPENING, WESTSIDERS?

📍 13375 Madison Ave, Lakewood
📅 All weekend long

If Spirit Halloween and the Addams Family had a baby, it’d look a lot like this event.

Cleveland Curiosities is throwing a Hallowe’en Sale that’s spooky, strange, and irresistibly Cleveland. You’ll find weird antiques, oddities, and maybe something cursed — all at prices that won’t haunt your bank account.

Costumes are encouraged for all well-behaved creatures ages 0-1,000 (so yes, that includes your uncle who refuses to take off his Browns jersey). Dress to impress — there are prizes for the best costumes and maybe a few tricks along with the treats.

If you love Lakewood weird, this is your weekend.
